Fairest Cape Meander was born from the passion and vision of Cathy Oosterwyk, a dedicated entrepreneur with a deep love for travel, culture, and sharing the beauty of South Africa. Cathy’s journey in tourism began in 2005 when she became a qualified tour guide. After working as a freelance guide for several months, she realized her true calling was to create a tour business that would offer personalized, high-quality experiences, showcasing the rich history, stunning landscapes, and diverse cultures of the Cape region.
In 2006, Cathy took a bold step by purchasing her first tour vehicle and launching Cathy’s Tours. Starting as a one-woman operation, she faced many challenges, including financial constraints and industry barriers. However, her determination and resilience pushed her forward. Cathy built strong relationships with travel agents and local businesses, gradually gaining clients who appreciated her authentic approach and deep knowledge of the region.
As Cathy’s reputation grew, so did the company. In 2016, with the addition of key family members, her husband Vivian, son Gavin, and daughter Vivienne, the business underwent a rebrand and became Fairest Cape Meander. The name was inspired by a women’s tourism organization Cathy co-founded between 2009 and 2012. This initiative, developed in collaboration with two other passionate women, aimed to promote sustainable and responsible tourism in South Africa. Cathy later acquired the rights to the name, officially establishing Fairest Cape Meander as a tour operator in Cape Town and beyond.
Despite facing significant challenges as a woman in business, Cathy’s persistence paid off. Within five years, she had paid off her first tour vehicle and expanded her fleet to meet growing demand. She also pioneered unique tour experiences, such as the Cape Agulhas Day Tour to the southernmost tip of Africa, and the West Coast Flower Tour, a seasonal spectacle that remains one of South Africa’s most breathtaking natural attractions. These exclusive tours set Fairest Cape Meander apart, attracting both local and international travelers seeking unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences.
As demand for tailored travel experiences in South Africa increased, the company expanded its operations. Over the years, Cathy built a dedicated team, hiring experienced tour guides, drivers, a head of operations, head of logistics & administration, and a digital marketer. Fairest Cape Meander has earned a reputation for warm hospitality and unforgettable travel experiences.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, when the tourism industry faced unprecedented challenges, Fairest Cape Meander adapted and secured key contracts, ensuring the company’s sustainability. This period tested Cathy’s leadership and ability to navigate uncertainty, but the business not only survived—it emerged stronger than ever.
Today, Fairest Cape Meander continues to grow, offering a diverse range of tours, including Cape Peninsula adventures, Winelands experiences, the scenic Garden Route, and customized itineraries for travellers seeking immersive journeys. Cathy ensures each tour reflects the company’s core values of authenticity, excellence, and customer satisfaction.
